Before You Contribute change « Thread Started on Oct 2, 2006, 6:50am »
------ Only some minor changes ------ Before changing a profile and making a contribution, ensure that you have considered the following:
Before editing an existing profile, make Make sure you have refreshed it the profile from the main online database so that you are starting with the most recent version. Read the prior previous Contribution Notes. They will give you information about contributions that other users have already made. There are two specific things that you need to be particularly aware of:
Have other users verified discrepancies between the cover and the actual disc information? If so, do notnot contribute the incorrect information again. Are there pending contributions from other users, which have yet to be evaluated approved and/or released by IVS screeners? If so, you need to ensure that your contribution will notnot overwrite pending corrections with incorrect information again. Or are you duplicating the contribution that is pending, just contributing the same information again?
Acceptable contributions correct existing data or add data that is missing. It is notnot acceptable to make a contribution to simply re-sort subjective items such as genres, or to remove/add genres based on personal choice. Studios occasionally re-release titles with the same UPC barcode number sequence, but with changed content (e.g. Cover Images, Case Type and Overview). All information in the main DVD Profiler online database is to be for the Original Release version of the disc; do notnot contribute any information that is specific to a re-release different on the re-release from what was on the Original Release. You can of course keep this re-release information in your local database profile, but do notnot contribute it to the main online database.

I had a feeling that someone would comment on the 'not's.
I put the 'not's in bold format to further emphases the importance. Is that okay? I believe it will cause most readers to think twice before submitting a profile.
I also think, that having a single word in bold is more powerful than having an entire sentence in bold as having an entire sentence in bold takes away focus (for some people), and possible the readers interest. It's just a more subtle approach.
Examples:
Have other users verified discrepancies between the cover and the actual disc information? If so, do not contribute the incorrect information again.
Have other users verified discrepancies between the cover and the actual disc information? If so, do not contribute the incorrect information again.

[Edit] Fixed a copy paste error in the examples.

Sorry I didn't jump in earlier, but I'd make the following changes:
In the first bullet, remove "Before editing an existing profile". It is repetitive of the opening sentence.
In the second bullet, where you removed "prior", I would use the word "previous" instead of nothing. This reinforces that they should be reviewing any previously submitted updates. I'd also add "already" in the phrase "that other users have 'already' made".
In the second sub-bullet in this section, instead of "yet to be evaluated by IVS screeners", I would say "yet to be 'approved and/or released' by 'the' IVS screeners". This is in line with the terms actually used in the program.
In the same section, I would remove "just contributing the same information again". it is repetitive.
Under the last bullet, where you replaced "UPC" with "barcode number sequence" I would replace that with "UPC/EAN". this is the way the barcode is defined in an earlier section, and is pretty universally understood.
And finally in the last bullet, I'd replace "do not contribute any information that is specific to a re-release" with "do not contribute any information that is different on the re-release from what was on the Original Release".

Well... I don't know... okay, lol

Yea, I'll work 'previous' right back in there. Adding 'already' as you suggest also sounds good.

Yep, I will change it.

Delete, delete, delete...

I think barcode number sequence says it all, without any reference to any specific barcode system.

I don't really mind changing "evaluated" to "approved and/or released".
However, I was of the impression, that the comparison screen always uses the latest profile version, not only the latest released version. In that case changing "evaluated" to "approved" should be enough... (This situation becomes usually most apparent, when "new" profiles suddenly become available for voting, as the fist contribution had been approved.)

You are correct, Achim.

You guys want me to change it? Are you okay with that, hal9g?
Before changing a profile and making a contribution, there are some things that you should consider.ensure that you have considered the following:
Before editing an existing profile, make sure you have refreshed it from the online database so that you are starting with the latestmost recent version.
Read
the prior Contribution Notes. They will give you information about
contributions that other users have made. There are two specific things
that you need to be particularly aware of:
Have other users verified discrepancies between the cover and the actual disc information? If so, do not contribute the incorrect box information again.
Are there pending contributions from other users,
which have yet to be evaluated by IVS screeners? If so, you need to
ensure that your contribution will not overwrite pending corrections
with incorrect information again. Or are you duplicating the
contribution that is pending, just contributing the same information
again?
Make sure your
contributions add significant value to the database. For example,
contributions that only re-order the information within a certain
section should not be submitted. These unnecessary changes are
highlighted in the rules. Please do not make a separate contribution
for them; however, they may be acceptable if you are making wider
corrections to a profile.Acceptable contributions correct
existing data or add data that is missing. It is not acceptable to make
a contribution to simply re-sort subjective items such as genres, or to remove/add genres based on personal choice.
Studios occasionally re-release titles with the same UPC, but with changed content – for example (e.g. Cover Images, Case Type and Overview). All information in the main DVD
Profiler database is to be for the Original Release version of the
disc; do not contribute any information that is specific to a
re-release. You can of course keep this re-release information in your
local database profile, but do not contribute it to the main database.
