 Introduction change
« Thread Started on Aug 24, 2006, 10:40am »

Thank you for your interest in contributing to the DVD Profiler main online database!

Main online database
InterVocative Software's (IVS) main online database of Digital Versatile/Video Disc (DVD) information is the most complete and accurate of it's its type in the world, thanks to contributions from users like you. In order to ensure accuracy and consistency within the main online database, but also as part of our ongoing quest to maintain, improve and refine the main online database, we've we have created this set of these rules governing to govern all contributions.

Please familiarize yourself with these rules and feel free to come back here whenever you have a question.

As part of our ongoing quest to maintain, improve and refine the largest database of DVD information in the world, we have created these rules. These rules apply to online contributions. You can use DVD Profiler locally, or you can contribute to the main online database, or you can do both. If you want to contribute to the online database, the rules
as they tell you how to complete each DVD Profiler field.

You can use DVD Profiler locally (local database), or you can contribute to the main online database, or you can do both.

Local database

If you wish to store different information in your local profiles, you are free to do so in your local database, but do not contribute your information. The main database is standardized so that all profiles follow these rules. DVD Profiler allows you to lock your data in your local database so that it is not overwritten by updates from the main online database. If you completely lock your profiles, your personal information (with the exception of Cover Scans) will still show in your online database, called My Profiler. Only unlocked fields in a profile will be updated.

My Profiler
You can upload your collection to IVS through DVD Profiler for the purpose to display of displaying your collection to others.
If you completely lock your profiles, your personal information (with the exception of Cover Scans of cover scans) will still show in your online database, called My Profiler. You are however required to upload your collection in order to vote on profiles.

Contribution
The authoritative source for information submitted is the DVD itself, where appropriate. Specific details will be found in the appropriate sections sub-section following this introduction. Please don't make a correction to an existing profile based on the content of a third party database or the specifications printed on the cover. In both cases, errors abound, so always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible.

These rules apply to all profiles, but there are two special cases where the rules need clarification. Where you see the icons shown below, refer to the special instructions at the end of this document. These are titled Movie Box sets and TV Series on DVD.

[icon] TV Series on DVD

We hope every user learns something from this list of rules, and that reading all of the rules adds to your enjoyment of DVD Profiler!

Note: These rules are subject to change without notice. For a list of selected significant updates, see the Revision History.

[Note to self]
  • Move and rewrite the two sentences starting from "Please don't..." from "Contribution" paragraph in the "Introduction" section to "What to contribute" section.
[Edit]
  • 60909: Updated sentence in "My Profiler" paragraph ('to display' -> 'of displaying').
  • 61002: Note to self is done. No other correction was made.

:)

This looks promising!

I actually thought there would be wild discussions on this (which is why I didn't create a voting thread). I guess the correct course of action would have been to submit it as a voting thread right away.

I'm unsure what to do now. Any ideas? [image]

so, please do not look upon me as a naysayer, because i think it is an excellent piece of editing and reconstruction...

(here it comes...)

however...

I would consider finding a way to work back in:

"Please don't make a correction to an existing profile based on the content of a third party database or the specifications printed on the cover. In both cases, errors abound, so always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible."

if not here, then elsewhere in the rules. i think even through a rule in the negative, it is a piece of advise that should be out there.

don't hate me because i'm different...

krik :D

... "always"... ..."whenever possible"... ?

Seems like a contradiction in terms. Is it "always" or is it "whenever possible"?

Sometimes it's one, other times it's usually the other. That always ought to be easy to understand occasionally. So I'm not sure I see the problem. [image]

No, you did just fine... As you said there could have been more discussions. So, it's always good to present a proposal for discussion first, seeing if there is additional input. A little later, once the final wording is clear, you open up a voting thread, possibly asking members to vote there only and keep posting comments in the discussion thread...

I agree with Krik, on the paragraph to work back in, other than that I like it.

Mmmm feedback, nice :)

I think this "Please, don't... " passage belongs somewhere in the "What to Contribute" section. It makes more sense to have it there. Do you agree?

If we can agree on that, I can then continue with that section (as I have planned). I will make sure to bring forth the important parts ("third party database" and "the specifications printed on the cover" in relation to "correction to an existing profile").

krikarian: ehm, there's no hate emerging here, so everything is 8-)

ya_shin: thanks for clearing that out. I will do precisely that. I'll give it a some time so people have a chance to comment.

So, any additional comments?

Xyrano, I agree, the "Don't... " passage might be better stated in the what to contribute section. Makes much more sense there.

Under "My Profiler", the first sentence should read "You can upload your collection to IVS through DVD Profiler for the purpose of displaying your collection to others.

Ooooo, it's quiet here.

Forgive a blunt question, coz I know you guys are doing this purely on voluntary basis, but I've been wondering, if my proposal ever will make it... you know, "down there"? [image]

Introduction

Thank you for your interest in contributing to the DVD Profiler main database!

InterVocative Software's database of DVD information is the most complete and accurate of it's type in the world, thanks to contributions from users like you. In order to ensure accuracy and consistency within the database, we've created this set of rules governing contributions.

If you want to contribute to the online database, the rules tell you how to complete each DVD Profiler field.

If you wish to savestore different information in your local profiles, you are free to do so in your local database, but do not contribute your information. The main database is standardized so that all profiles follow these rules. DVD Profiler allows you to lock your data so that it is not overwritten by updates from the main database. If you completely lock your profiles, your personal information (with the exception of Cover Scans) will still show in your online database, called My Profiler.

The authoritative source for information submitted should beis the DVD itself, where appropriate. Specific details will be found in the appropriate sections following this introduction. Please don't make a correction to an existing profile based on the content of a third party database or the specifications printed on the cover. In both cases, errors abound, so always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible.

These rules apply to all kinds of profilesall profiles, but there are two special cases where the rules need clarifications. Where you see the icons shown below, refer to the special instructions at the end of this document. These are titled Movie Box sets and TV Series on DVD.

Note: The standard rules do apply for these special cases; the sections clarify specific ways the rules apply to box sets and television series on DVD.

We hope every user learns something from this list of rules, and that reading all of the rules adds to your enjoyment of DVD Profiler!

Note: These rules are subject to change without notice. For a list of selected significant updates, see the Revision History.
